Origin of the name

This plant was chosen to represent the Centre because of its scientific name, taraxacum officinale. The origin of the word is from the Greek ‘taraxos’ (disorders) and ‘akos’ (a remedy). Both emotional and physical disorders can be healed by using this plant. The knowledge that mind and body are connected in profound ways is core to the Dandelion Centre’s approach.

Healing properties

Since ancient times, the roots, foliage and flower of the dandelion have been valued for their inherent healing properties. Benefits include:

  • Detoxifying the body by improving kidney and liver health
  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Regulating hormone balance
  • Stimulating insulin production (great for diabetics!)
  • Providing a healthy dose of iron, calcium, and vitamin A, C, D and K
